Nach dem Brandschutz, die Hilfeleistung und den Katastrophenschutz (BHKG) ist der Brand- und Katastrophenschutz Aufgabe der Städte und Gemeinden. Daher unterhält auch die Gemeinde Gangelt eine freiwillige Feuerwehr um den Schutz der Bevölkerung sicher zu stellen.
Freiwillige Feuerwehr heißt, im Gegensatz zu einer Berufsfeuerwehr, dass die Einsatzkräfte der Feuerwehr ihren Lebensunterhalt nicht mit der Feuerwehrarbeit verdienen. Der Einsatz bei der Feuerwehr geschieht ehrenamtlich und endgeldlos.
Dazu gehören nicht nur die Hilfeleistung im Notfall, sondern auch die Ausbildung, Weiterbildung, regelmäßige Üben und Leistungsüberprüfungen. Auch vorbeugender Brandschutz, wie Brandschutzerziehung, Beratungen und Begehungen gehören zur ehrenamtlichen Arbeit.
